5. Dissect the hamstrings from origin to insertion.
Identify the hamstring muscles: long head of the biceps femoris, short head of the biceps femoris, semitendinosus muscle, more medially and deep, the semimembranosus muscle. Identify the nerves to the hamstring muscles. The tibial nerve supplies the semitendinosus and semimembranosus muscle. The long head of the biceps femoris muscle is also supplied by the tibial portion of the sciatic nerve. The short head is innervated by the common fibular nerve. Note also that the ischiocondylar portion of the adductor magnus muscle, like a hamstring, is innervated by the tibial nerve.
