As the stomach develops it undergoes a 90o clockwise rotation along its longitudinal axis. Because of this clockwise rotation, the dorsal mesentery (dorsal mesogastrium) is carried to the left and anteriorly and forms the greater omentum.

In addition, the vagus nerves change orientation as they pass through the esophageal hiatus of the diaphragm. The left vagus nerve becomes the anterior vagal trunk and innervates the ventral surface of the stomach. The right vagus nerve becomes the posterior vagal trunk and innervates the posterior surface of the stomach, and sends a branch into the celiac plexus.
